City Life/Vida Urbana is a grassroots community organization committed to fighting for racial, social and economic justice and gender equality by building working class power. City Life promotes individual empowerment, develops community leaders and build collective power to effect systemic change and transform society. City Life reaches out to, organizes with, and provides case assistance and access to legal support for low- and moderate-income tenants and small homeowners threatened with the loss of their homes.

  • Survivors of violence including domestic violence, community violence, human trafficking, and sexual assault

  • Single men of Color

  • People with a criminal offender record (CORI)

  • People with accessibility challenges

  • People with mental health issues

  • Seniors

  • Individuals or families with mixed status

    *Individuals and families are active members of a City Life Tenant Association

City LIfe plans to support the following service gaps with ISHI dollars:

  • A full-time attorney to represent households facing evictions with housing court assistance and legal support

  • Outside legal supports with trusted housing lawyers on an individual case basis

  • Broker fees, first/last/security

  • Moving expenses for relocation, such as movers, truck rental or storage

  • Living expenses that exceed monthly budget after rent or mortgage is paid, such as food, health care, transportation or childcare

  • Payment for back rent or rent owed by the tenant

  • Gap funding for living expenses while seeking alternative housing. For example, sudden loss of a roommate, who is no longer helping with expenses

  • Replacing furnishings and household items damaged by bad conditions, such as bedbugs or mold

City Life can disperse money to individuals or families within 2-5 business days.
